Simpson lahir dari pasangan Brad dan Angie Simpson. Dia memiliki dua saudara kandung yang lebih muda, Tom dan Alli. Ia juga seorang perenang berbakat dan memenangkan dua medali emas di Kejuaraan Renang Queensland. Simpson dilatih di Klub Renang Miami di bawah pelatih Ken Nixon. Simpson ibu Angie bekerja sebagai sukarelawan di klub ini.
Simpson mulai merekam lagu di kamar tidurnya selama musim panas tahun 2009 di YouTube, menampilkan "I'm Yours" oleh Jason Mraz, "Cry Me a River" dan "Señorita" oleh Justin Timberlake, "I Want You Back" oleh Jackson 5^[9] dan lagunya sendiri, "One"^[10] dan "Perfect". Dia kemudian ditemukan di YouTube oleh Shawn Campbell,^[12] seorang produser rekaman yang telah beberapa kali masuk nominasi Grammy yang telah menjadi produser untuk Jay-Z dan artis lainnya. Peningkatan popularitas Simpson mulai mendapat pengakuan setelah tampil pada acara The 7.30 Report pada bulan Desember 2009.
